Love the Lemon and Garlic Long Stemmed Broccoli side you get at Nando’s? Now you can make it at home with this easy peasy Nando’s fakeaway version!
Nando’s the healthy version…
One thing I love about Nando’s is – if you choose the right sides – it can actually be quite a healthy eating out option.
And one of the healthiest sides is surely the Lemon and Garlic Long Stemmed Broccoli?
This side just consists of tenderstem broccoli, lemon and garlic – all of which are well known for being packed with nutritional goodness.
(Other healthy Nando’s sides include: Rainbow Slaw, Corn On The Cob, Macho Peas, Spiced Grains and Butternut Squash, Spicy Rice and the mixed leaf salad. Pair a couple of these sides with Peri Peri Chicken Breasts for a surprisingly healthy and relatively low calorie meal.)
How to make Nando’s Lemon and Garlic Broccoli at home
This healthy Nando’s side is very easy to make at home. I have developed a super simple method which only uses 1 pan and gives super authentic results every time!
All you need to do is place olive oil and the prepared broccoli in a large saucepan or wok, then stir fry over a high heat until just starting to get tinged with brown. Next, turn the heat right down and add a splash of boiling water. Cover with a lid and allow to steam until the broccoli is almost done. Keep the heat turned down low and add the chopped garlic. Stir fry for 1 more minute, taking care not to burn the garlic. Finally, tip onto a serving platter then squeeze over the juice of ½ a lemon and scatter over a little sea salt.

What to do with leftover Lemon and Garlic Broccoli
Place any leftovers in a lidded container in the fridge, where they will keep for up to 3 days.
To reheat, simply tip the leftovers into a frying pan with a good splash of water and stir-fry until piping hot all the way through.
Alternatively reheat the leftover broccoli in the microwave until piping hot all the way through.
Can you freeze Lemon and Garlic Broccoli?
I don’t recommend freezing this dish.

Lemon and Garlic Broccoli
Ingredients
- 200 g tenderstem broccoli
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Splash of boiling water
- 3 cloves garlic finely chopped
- ½ lemon or to taste
- Sea salt to taste
Instructions
- Trim the ends of the tenderstem broccoli and cut any big ones in half lengthways – the aim is that all the broccoli spears should be roughly the same size.
- Place the olive oil and the prepared broccoli in a large saucepan or wok, over a high heat, and stir fry for 2 minutes – until just starting to get tinged with brown.
- Turn the heat right down and add a splash of boiling water. Cover with a lid and allow to steam for 2-3 minutes, or until the broccoli is almost done.
- Keep the heat turned down low and add the chopped garlic. Stir fry for 1 minute. Do not let the garlic burn!
- Tip onto a serving platter and squeeze over the juice of ½ a lemon - or to taste. (See Note 1.)
- Finally scatter over a little sea salt - to taste. (I find about 4 twists of my salt mill is perfect for my tastes.)
- Serve with your favourite Nando’s chicken dishes!
Notes
- DO NOT add the lemon juice while the broccoli is still in the pan. I’m not sure why (I’m guessing some kind of chemical reaction?), but it turns the broccoli brown and it looks very unappetising!
- Not suitable for freezing.
- Nutrition information is approximate and meant as a guideline only.
