The ultimate, low effort, maximum flavour recipe, these Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Sliders are ridiculously delicious and oh so easy – with under 5 minutes prep time, let your Crock-Pot take the strain this summer!
I absolutely love slow cooking…for me it is the absolute epitome of what Easy Peasy Foodie is all about – put a few simple ingredients into a pot, pop it in your oven and bam! Several hours later you have a super flavoursome meal with virtually zero effort. I have tons of slow cooked recipes on my site, because I just love’em. Totally easy peasy, totally foodie – my kind of cooking.
The only trouble with slow cooking in an oven is it generates an awful lot of heat…not great for your energy bills, but even worse when the temperature outside is pushing close to 30 and you work in your kitchen…
I was recently working on another slow cooked recipe – which involved cooking pork in the oven for the best part of 6 hours…and the day I had planned to take the photographs was literally the hottest day of the year – and this is a particularly hot year…I was sweltering!
So when I posted pictures on Instagram and Facebook, and moaned about how hot it was in my kitchen…all my friends laughed and asked the same question: ‘why don’t you get a slow cooker?’
It was a very good point, and as if by magic, a few days later I was asked by the lovely people at Crock-Pot if I’d like to test the Crock-Pot 4.7L Digital Countdown Slow Cooker, I didn’t have to be asked twice!
I know slow cookers are traditionally thought of as winter gadgets – and obviously they are fab for wintery food, such as stews and casseroles, but actually I think they are even better in the summer – after all who wants their oven on at all when the weather is hot, let alone FOR 6 HOURS?!! And whilst it is nice to have a few salads and lighter meals, a whole summer of salads can get a little dull.
Cooking in the slow cooker means you can have the best of both worlds – deliciously easy slow cooked meals, but without heating up your whole house!
And there are SO MANY delicious things you can make in a slow cooker – I’ve been getting very excited about all the summery recipes you can make in a Crock-Pot: slow cooked meats for sure, especially BBQ flavoured ones. But also poached salmon, fajitas, stuffed peppers, corn on the cob, pasta sauces, roast chicken and even sweet treats such as crumbles, cobblers, cheesecakes and brownies! I am going to have so much fun playing with my new Crock-Pot this summer.
But the recipe I wanted to share with you today is an absolute stunner… Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Sliders – these are a total doddle to make in the slow cooker and are utterly delicious! All you need to do is place onions, chicken breasts and BBQ sauce in the Crock-Pot, set the temperature and the timer and wait (that last bit is the hardest part!) Literally 5 minutes prep, possibly less if you get your skates on!!
Then when the chicken is ready, remove from the Crock-Pot and place on a board or plate and shred, then return it to the Crock-Pot and stir to coat the chicken in all that delicious BBQ sauce.
And I really, really love how easy peasy my new Crock-Pot is to use. All you have to do is plug it in, put your food in, put the lid on, press one button to choose between high or low and another button to set the temperature (available in increments of 30 minutes up to 20 hours!) and the Crock-Pot begins automatically and it has a counter which counts down the minutes, so you know exactly when your food will be ready. When the time’s up the Crock-Pot moves automatically onto the keep warm setting, so your food will stay warm, even if you are not ready to eat yet.
The Crock-Pot is super easy to clean too – the lid and inner part can go in the dishwasher, whilst the outside just needs to be wiped down with soft cloth and warm soapy water.
You can use any BBQ sauce you fancy in this, but I would really recommend using my Healthy Homemade BBQ Sauce – it’s super tasty and not sickly sweet and full of additives as so many commercially made BBQ sauces are.
To serve these Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Sliders up, simply cut open bread rolls, load up with coleslaw and the wonderful shredded BBQ chicken and top with some more of that gorgeous BBQ sauce and you are done…perfect for al fresco summer eating (or a carpet picnic if the weather is too bad!).
So then guys, I need your help. What should I make next in my new Crock Pot? Let me know in the comments below!
Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Sliders and Crock-Pot Review
Ingredients
- 2 onions sliced
- 4 skinless chicken breasts or 8 skinless boneless chicken thighs (roughly 750g/1¾lb)
- 400 ml Healthy Homemade BBQ Sauce (or your favourite BBQ sauce)
- 8 white or brown bread rolls
- No Mayo Coleslaw (or your favourite coleslaw)
Instructions
- Place the sliced onion in the slow cooker (I used Crock-Pot 4.7L / 4 quart) and place the chicken on top. Pour over the BBQ sauce.
- Cover and cook on Low for 6 hours or High for 4 hours, or until the chicken is tender and easy to shred.
- Remove the chicken breasts from the slow cooker and put on a plate or a board. Shred using two forks, then return the chicken to the slow cooker and mix with the sauce and onions.
- To serve, cut open the bread rolls, load up with coleslaw and the shredded chicken and top with more BBQ sauce.

well these sound fabulous Eb. Im surprised you didnt have a slow cooker already as they are great for easy peasy recipes and as you say dont heat up the house. Also great when you are out and about all day during school holidays. Nothing worse than coming home with the kids starving and nothing to eat, when the last thing you want to do is cook. so The slow cooker can save the day.

It is utter madness that I didn’t already have a slow cooker – I am such a fan of slow cooked things – from large pieces of meat to stews, curries and tagines, it is one of my favourite ways to cook – and now I have my Crock-Pot, there will be no stopping me…I’ve already got so many ideas I want to try out in in!! Wow Eb, that slider looks sooo tempting – and that’s coming from a vegetarian. The slow cooker sounds so incredibly useful too, as you say who really wants to put the oven on when the weather was so hot! I can imagine it being great for some sort of mixed bean dish too.

Haha – you’re not the only veggie to say that! I really feel like I’ve created a good recipe if vegetarians say it looks good!! 😀 And I am sure you could achieve something similar using jackfruit. It’s amazing how much can be done in the slow cooker – definitely lots of lovely veggie dishes, for sure! Eb x

Eb, these look amazing. I love the BBQ sauce recipe, too. My girlfriend (no food allergies, just a healthy eater and good meal planner) uses her crock every weekend to prep weeknight dinners. I’m not that organized, but it’s definitely a good goal!
Eb Gargano says
Thanks Nicole – I love the idea of creating all the weeknight meals at the weekend – that’s amazing organisation! And I imagine made much easier with a Crock Pot (or two!) on the go. Eb x

Oh wow Eb these look epic! I love my crock pot, a family favourite is definitely slow cooked beef on a Sunday, bolognese sauce is even better slow cooked. You are going to have so much fun playing with recipes. Enjoy x Thank you for sharing with #CookBlogShare x
Eb Gargano says
Aw, thanks Kirsty – I am really pleased with them – and so super simple! I need to try slow cooked beef in the slow cooker – that will surely be amazing…so prefer slow cooked beef dishes to fast cooked ones…and I can just imagine how good it’s going to make my bolognese taste!! So many possibilities!!! Eb x

Fabulous recipe Eb. Looks absolutely delicious. I have an Aga so have a passion for slow cooking too. This one is def for the recipe list xx
Eb Gargano says
Slow cooking is the best! I do it often in my oven…but so loving having a slow cooker, which doesn’t turn my kitchen into a sauna at this time of year! And so simple to use. Never tried cooking in an Aga, but have eaten food from an Aga several times, so I know it creates some wonderful results! Eb x

I’m also surprised you didn’t have a slow cooker. I’m such a fan of mine and use it all the time for dishes like this as well as various stews. Most of them don’t make it onto the blog as it’s so easy just to throw things in, close the lid and then have dinner ready when you need it later. These look great and a lovely way to use that homemade bbq sauce! Thanks for sharing with #CookOnceEatTwice x
Eb Gargano says
I know, I know – total madness. Especially as that ‘throw things in, close the lid, have dinner ready when you need it’ type of cooking is exactly my style!! 😀 Eb x

I love my slow cooker too! Cooking doesn’t get much easier than that, does it? Pulled chicken / pork / beef is quite simply divine. Your burgers look right up my street! Thanks for joining in with #FreeFromFridays.

This looks amazing. I love chicken and I love my slow cooker. Agree it’s so convenient and just as good in summer as winter! I’ve got into making veggie bolognese recently, but need to diversify…I’m going to try to make your healthy BBQ sauce next with the chicken! #brillblogposts

Thanks Nat! I am so loving having my slow cooker – so many ideas I want to try! Hope you enjoy this recipe – let me know how you get on! 😀 Eb x

Hi! So far we’ve loved all the recipes we’ve tried from your fab page. I really like the ease of this one, I hadn’t thought to do while chicken breasts in the slow cooker – no idea why as we do curry in t all the time! Ha. I reply don’t like bbq flavour though. Have you a suggestion for something like a peri peri sauce? (Yep I know I can just buy one but would be good to make sonething). Thanks. (Ps. Just had the chicken and chorizo Traybake for tea!)
Eb Gargano says
Aw, thanks Elizabeth – that’s good to hear 😀 If you like peri peri, you could try using my peri peri marinade from this recipe >>> https://www.easypeasyfoodie.com/peri-peri-chicken-nandos-copycat/, but adding in some passata to make it into more of a ‘sauce’. Hope that helps – I’d love to hear how it turn out. Eb 🙂

Thanks. I am going to make this for a mid-week work potluck when I have little time to prep. By the way, a crock pot does generate quite a bit of heat, although not as much as the oven. So when I use my crockpot in the summer (can get up to 100 where I live) but don’t want to complete with the AC in the house. I plug in my crockpot outside, just outside the back door on a bench. Voila! The outside animals (dogs, cats, chickens do not bother it because it is hot! Works for us.
Eb Gargano says
So pleased you enjoy the recipe. And good shout on plugging the crock pot in outdoors on a very hot day! Eb 🙂
