When you see how easy and delicious this 5 Minute Blender Salsa is, you’ll ditch shop-bought salsa for good! Made with just 7 easy ingredients and ready in just 5 minutes, plus it’s super easy to make in a big batch and freeze for another day!
Homemade salsa – in just 5 minutes!
I really love proper homemade salsa. It’s so much better than store-bought salsa. But if you prepare it the traditional way: frying or grilling the ingredients first, then blending and cooking, it can take a little while.
So I got to thinking, what if I just threw all the ingredients in a blender and hit ‘blend’ – would that still taste good? Well, it turns out the answer is yes! You can have a delicious homemade salsa in under 5 minutes by just blending a tin of tomatoes, some fresh chillies, onion, garlic, coriander, lime juice and salt.
However, if you want to make your salsa ‘next-level’, I highly recommend doing the optional step of ‘frying’ your salsa afterwards. Yes, I know that might tip you slightly over the 5 minute mark, but it is well worth it – the flavours really come together and the salsa tastes extra good!
Either way, you can have a salsa that’s way better than store-bought in a matter of minutes. When you see how easy and delicious this 5 Minute Blender Salsa is, you’ll ditch shop-bought salsa for good!
How to make 5 Minute Blender Salsa
This 5 Minute Blender Salsa is ridiculously easy to make!
All you need to do is throw a tin of chopped tomatoes, some fresh chillies, onion, garlic, coriander (AKA cilantro), lime juice and salt into a blender… and blend!
And for ‘next level’ salsa, simply place a frying pan over a high heat for 1 minute. Tip the blended salsa into the pan and bring to the boil. Then, reduce the heat and simmer for a couple of minutes.

Why use tinned tomatoes in salsa?
Usually salsa is made with fresh tomatoes, but I have chosen to use tinned tomatoes in this 5 Minute Blender Salsa recipe for two key reasons.
First of all, it’s less prep! This recipe is meant to be speedy, and opening a tin of tomatoes is much quicker than chopping up some fresh tomatoes.
Secondly, it’s quite hard here in the UK to get tomatoes that are good quality enough to make salsa taste good. You get a much better flavour from tinned tomatoes.
What to serve 5 Minute Blender Salsa with
This 5 Minute Blender Salsa goes with all your Mexican and Tex-Mex favourites like:
- Easy Mexican Beef Birria
- Easy Beef Birria Tacos
- Mexican Chicken And Rice (Arroz Con Pollo)
- Chicken Tinga Tacos
- Easy Breakfast Burritos
- Easy Refried Bean Quesadillas
And, of course, it’s great just served simply with tortilla chips!
(I like to make up a bowl of this 5 Minute Blender Salsa and my Easy 4 Ingredient Guacamole and serve them with tortilla chips as ‘nibbles’ before a Mexican-themed dinner party.)
What to do with leftover salsa
Place any leftovers in a lidded container in the fridge, where they will keep for about a week.
Personally, I think this salsa is even better cold, but if you want it warm, simply reheat in a saucepan or microwave, until piping hot.
Can you freeze salsa?
Absolutely! Salsa freezes beautifully. Place the cooked and cooled salsa in a lidded container in the freezer, where it will keep for up to 6 months.
Defrost overnight in the fridge, or for a couple of hours at room temperature.
Eat cold or reheat as above.

5 Minute Blender Salsa
Ingredients
- 400 g tin chopped tomatoes (I use Napolina)
- 2 green medium-hot chillies stalk removed (I use the green ones from Tesco Mixed Chillies - See Note 1)
- 1 small onion skin removed and quartered
- 2 cloves garlic skin removed and roughly chopped
- 5 g fresh coriander (AKA cilantro) roughly chopped
- Juice of ¼ lime or to taste
- ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
Instructions
- Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend.
- Taste and add more lime and salt, if needed. (See Note 2)
- (Optional) For ‘next level’ salsa, place a frying pan over a high heat for 1 minute. Tip the salsa into the pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 2-5 minutes.
Notes
- I recommend using 2 medium-hot chillies in this salsa. This gives a medium-hot salsa. But if you prefer a milder salsa, just use 1 chilli OR use 2 but take the seeds and membranes out before blending. If you prefer a hotter salsa, use more chillies or use hotter chillies!
- You can stop here and the salsa will be delicious and already way better than shop-bought salsa. However, if you want to make your salsa ‘next-level’, I highly recommend doing the optional step of ‘frying’ your salsa – the flavours really come together and the salsa tastes extra good!
- Suitable for freezing.

I love that it’s so quick and simple—just toss everything in the blender and done. Using tinned tomatoes makes perfect sense too, especially when fresh ones aren’t great. Definitely going to try the frying step to get that extra flavor punch. Plus, freezing it for later is super convenient. This might just make me stop buying salsa at the store!
